This is our new favorite date night spot. Healthier option that were very tasty. We both ordered yellow curry bowls. One with brown rice and the other with noodles. We also got some pot stickers. Staff were friendly. The dining area needed a little help. Only reason atmosphere is not five star.
Overview
Walking into Zao Asian Cafe for the first time felt a lot like discovering a reliable neighborhood spot that somehow still surprises you. Located at 11486 District Dr #100, South Jordan, UT 84095, United States, itβs one of those fast-casual Asian kitchens that balances speed with care, which isnβt easy to pull off consistently. Iβve eaten here more times than I can count, both solo lunches and quick family dinners, and the experience has stayed impressively steady.
The menu is where things really click. Instead of overwhelming you with endless options, it focuses on customizable bowls, fresh stir-fries, noodles, and rice plates inspired by flavors from Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. The process is straightforward: choose your base, pick a protein, add vegetables, and finish with a sauce. I usually go for a rice bowl with grilled chicken and vegetables, then switch sauces depending on my mood. The sweet chili is a crowd favorite, but the spicy Korean-style sauce packs a deeper, slower heat that feels carefully balanced rather than aggressive.
What stands out from an experience perspective is how fast everything moves without feeling rushed. You can watch the kitchen line work in real time, which builds confidence in the freshness. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, over 60% of diners value being able to see food preparation in fast-casual restaurants, and this setup clearly taps into that trust factor. Ingredients here look crisp, portions feel fair, and nothing comes across as sitting under a heat lamp too long.
From a nutrition standpoint, Zao Asian Cafe fits well with modern dining habits. Many people, myself included, want meals that feel lighter but still filling. Research published by Harvardβs School of Public Health notes that meals built around vegetables, lean proteins, and controlled portions of rice can support better energy levels throughout the day. While this isnβt marketed as health food, itβs easy to build a balanced plate if that matters to you. That said, sauces can be higher in sodium, which is common in Asian-inspired cuisine, so moderation is worth keeping in mind.
Reviews around South Jordan often highlight consistency, and that matches my experience. Whether itβs a weekday lunch rush or a slower evening, the flavors donβt drift. That reliability matters. Restaurant consultant Danny Meyer often emphasizes that hospitality is about how guests feel after they leave, not just what they eat, and this place seems to understand that. Staff interactions are friendly but efficient, and mistakes are rare. On one visit, my order came out missing an ingredient, and it was corrected immediately without any awkward back-and-forth.
The location itself adds to the appeal. Being in the District area makes it convenient for shoppers, office workers, and families alike. Parking is easy, and the dining room stays clean even during busy hours. Itβs not designed for lingering all afternoon, but itβs comfortable enough for a relaxed meal.
One thing worth noting is that while the menu is versatile, it doesnβt dive deeply into regional authenticity. If youβre looking for traditional, slow-cooked dishes tied to a specific country, this may not fully scratch that itch. Instead, it shines as a modern Asian fusion diner that prioritizes accessibility, speed, and consistent quality.
Over time, this spot has earned its place in my regular rotation because it delivers what it promises. The food tastes fresh, the process makes sense, and the overall experience feels dependable. For anyone scanning local restaurant reviews in South Jordan and looking for a place that blends convenience with flavor, this cafe fits naturally into everyday dining without trying too hard to impress.

Food here is so fresh, delicious, and healthy. I really like to come here because all the employees are genuinely kind. One time, one employee was cleaning and when I ordered something, she thoroughly washed her hands. What a great practice! Definitely my go to!
Food was delicious and fresh!!! Loved the brown rice bowl with chicken!!! The service was incredibly nice and friendly, they made my day!
I went to the Zao in South Jordan today for lunch. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl and Thai mango drink. The portion size is really good for the price and they taste so fresh and yummy. The manager was super nice and helpful as well. Would definitely recommend!
*6/11/19 Update: I visited this location again today and got the soup. It was suuuper yummy! So many noodles, I had to have my son finish them for me! Great broth flavor and the sweet corn in there is so yummy and adds great texture! LOVE!! Also love the staff members at this place. They are all great! We tried this location out today and had an awesome experience! The staff were kind and accommodating (I always ask for tons of cilantro, lol), and let us try the curry sauce to make sure we would like it prior to ordering. In case anyone is wondering, itβs quite sweet with just a tad of heat. My husband got the rice noodles with chicken, curry, corn, and veggies, and he LOVED it! I got a rice bowl with chicken, carrots, and cilantro with teriyaki sauce and loved mine too! The chicken was tasty and nice and lean, which is a huge deal to me, and the portion sizes are amazing for what you pay! We will definitely be going back! Yum!
Went here for lunch for the first time. It was very yummy Had honey Sriracha chicken. It was a little peffy but still good
This place lives up to its tag line of being simple and fresh. We ordered a salad and a rice bowl. They were both delicious. My husband and I thought this place had a lot of Thai flavors. I canβt wait to go back and try the tacos.
